experience

As controller I oversee the accounting and finance functions for four main operating business units as well as ancillary services. Under the main business units we operate 25 outpatient physical therapy locations, a PACE program for seniors, Hospice, and an inpatient rehabilitation hospital.

Many of the accomplishments in my time at Valir have included upgrading the ERP system including the implementation of AP invoice routing and automation and a spreadsheet based financial reporting package connected to the ERP for real time financial reports. I led and oversaw a top to bottom financial cleanup process for 45+ entities. Was the main point of contact for a company wide Quality of Earnings review by a third party firm as well as multiple financial audits, cost reporting, CMS annual bids, and a CMS financial audit. I also worked with banks and attorneys through a wind down of a New Market Tax Credit loan and investment and a refinance of maturing mortgage loans.

As the controller I worked alongside the Facilities and Corporate CFOs to maintain financial records of a three location hospital system and physician network.

Led accounting team in shortening month end close to six business days as required by new corporate management in the fall of 2018. In order to meet the shorter close I developed a process to leverage existing tools to bypass system limitations which allowed me to automate 90% of the steps in preparing consolidated financial reports. This cut the time spent preparing these reports from hours to minutes, giving executives more time to review and analyze variances.

Implemented an invoicing system to provide more accurate tracking of invoices for non-patient receivables. This allowed us to accurately apply payments and determine which invoices were truly outstanding and collect on older invoices. Through this we were able to reduce the balance over 30+ days from 45% to less than 5%.

Researched technical details surrounding the implementation of FASB Lease Accounting Standard (ASC842) in FY2019. I analyzed existing and subsequent leases to determine which leases met the requirements for the new standards and coordinated with the team managing the lease software to ensure each lease was recognized correctly.

Coordinated and was the point of contact for the accounting and payroll team when we brought on an anesthesia department to our employed physician group. Worked directly with the Director to ensure correct data was transferred from the anesthesia tracking software to the payroll and accounting team to accurately pay employed and contract providers in accordance with the contracts and our payroll schedule.

Provided detailed information to executive team during COVID-19 pandemic to support decision making regarding: PPP for our managed physician group, treatment of HHS Stimulus funds and Medicare Advance Payments, and monitoring cash levels and projections.

Worked with the Controller and CFO to prepare and analyze monthly financial statements and prepare presentation for quarterly board meetings. Provided support for management in reaching the $25m distribution goal in 2014. During my time there we managed endowment and trust funds for entities affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma. We also provided funds management and offered building loans for same entities.

Assurance Department: Led and assisted on engagements for a diverse group of entities across multiple industries. Managed timeline of test work to ensure completion and sufficient documentation for audit opinion in order to meet client’s reporting deadlines.

Title 31 Department: Performed internal audits of daily casino jackpot paperwork to ensure accuracy. Updated the Standard Operating Procedures and Audit template position to improve effectiveness and accuracy of internal audits.
